Are you using the 45w PSU, as a 27w may not provide enough power for the drive.
I now use my NVME as storage only, because every time a new install is required, it overwrites everything on the drive by taking over the whole drive, leaving me to re install all my data, I've returned to booting the O/S from an sdcard, (or pendrive).![:(]( "Sad")
Overwriting the whole disk is an extremely annoying habit of the RPi installer!![:x]( "Mad")
