There is an option to use the GPIO header UART (I can't remember what it is), but that won't show all of the initial messages.By default, does that imply it can be changed? Seems like it can't, so I'll have to get some JST SH connectors or a micro hdmi adapter to find out whats going on.
I bought some cheap JST SH 1.0mm 3 pin connectors withe wires attached and used one with a USB UART adaptor for debugging.
Alternatively you can use the Raspberry Pi Debug Probe which comes with the right connector for Pi 5 as well as the Pico range.
