I would have expected a push-fit SWD connection to work but I have only done that to monitor SWD levels, not actual debugging.
There are right-angle headers which will will reduce any increase in height. They can be fitted on top or below the PCB, may potentially be directed inwards on the non-wireless versions to avoid extending the board.
It is possible to bend straight headers to create right-angle headers, then slide the black plastic down to provide greater clearance with the PCB and components.
