Thank you @ejolson and @Akash Jana for replying. Both contain useful information to proceed with the project.

@ejolson I take your point about capacity. My NAS has hovered around 1.6Tb for a few years now so I think I can consider 2Tb sufficient storage.
Since 1.6 TB is all that's required, at some point I'd recommend making two verified backups and then switching your NAS to two-drive redundancy.

For me a mirror is different than backup, because it does not preserve historical information needed when file corruption or a mistake is made. I'd still use a large USB drive for incremental backups.
Thank you again. I'm still mulling the project over and haven't purchased any hardware yet so I've time to consider your additional info and I think you've made a very good point about the difference between mirroring and backing-up, one that I hadn't considered
