Kingston A400 is cheap and works very well. Only issue with external SSDs, beyond power issues, is that some USB/SATA adaptors work well and some are flakey. External NVMe SSD are likely even harder to sort out since there is less experience with them to draw on to find "good combinations" of adaptor and SSD.Thanks for the good advice. I also think the pimoroni nmve base is a nice option.
But I love my passive cooled pi 5 case, so I am bound to use an external ssd or nvme solution for now.
