I put in a bigger SSD from another Pi that was running Ubuntu 24.04 and it pretty much worked. The keyboard certainly behaved completely as it should, which was my main concern. Since the blinkenlights are operated by a separate chip, as Tim points out, they seem not to care about the operating system. Someday I will probably try the python bindings to play with the lights but that's for another day.
Tomorrow I try the thin copper heatsink for my cheap NVMe drive.
