My media server is a Pi 5 with a Samsung 870 QVO 8Tb 2.5" SSD in an enclosure that is powered via the USB cable. The Pi 5 power supply has no trouble powering both the Pi and the SSD.
I have another Pi 5 with a 52pi HAT that supports M.2 NVMe SSD plus 2.5G Ethernet, with a 2Tb SDD installed, but that requires two power supplies, one for the HAT and one for the Pi.
