@hippy, I am a bit confused about your saying that it's FAT32.
Yes that was wrong. I have corrected my post and my erroneous notes I referred to. I think that came about because 'df -T' reports the BOOTSEL disk as "vfat", same as the Pi Boot Partition which is FAT32. There is of course more to it than that.

It is indeed FAT16 for both RP2040 and RP235X -
