I've just realised that 768 is 256 * 3 and found a line in syslog that says 0x30000000 upwards will be ignored because I don't have HIGHMEM set in the kernel. "I thought that highmem was only for memory > 4GB. I'll fix my kernel and try again.
Fault reporting 101: Admit to using non-standard OS/kernel, preferably list their versions, even if they are standard.
