I get readings of 6.01 amps of current which seems very high (this would result in over 30W of power draw).

You math is faulty.

VDD_CORE_V is (on my Pi 5) 0.725V. Yours may differ.

7A at 0.725 V is 5.075W. Still a fair bit, but not horrendous. It does explain the factor of 6 in your calculations.
