Troubleshooting • Re: Pi5 No longer sees/mounts external USB SSD

It turned out to be the power adapter. When you mentioned that I went through my testing of the drive on a windows box and remembered I used a different adapter.

I didn't suspect the adapter because it was brand new. I should have though. Back when I was setting up this drive I formatted it on the windows box with NTFS and that went fine but when I was copying a few large media files to it (partially as a test of the drive) it went really really SLOWLY. But did eventually finish. Then when I tried to eject the drive it wouldn't or rather tried but never gave the "you can now disconnect the drive safely" message. So I shut down the system, but that also took a LONG time which is usually almost instant. Later when it came back up, the drive was shown as removable device/drive without any drive in it.

A bit of troubleshooting later I found the adapter had died. But it has been in constant use for 7 years and a lot of miles so I wrote it off that I wore it out (although I have never have wore one out like this before).

So this is the second adapter this drive has killed (one right away, the second about 60 days of use later). Which is a bit strange. From what I can find, the Crucial BX500 2tb model has a max of 2.4w. The adapters included with the enclosure are 5v 2amp which should be 10w plenty of power. Unless the BX500 can pull a lot more than that? I messaged Crucial directly about the situation but so far no response. I do have a 5v 3amp adapter that I could try.
