Sorry I have 2W so the only way to get it to work is to used the as a with the boot code.bin file?

IIRC the zero2W supports booting from a USB drive. What I don't know is whether it supports booting from a drive behind a USB hub and whether USB boot needs to be explicitly enabled. Try a forum search and a read of the official documentation (there's a link at the top of this page).

The bootcode.bin on SD approach makes no permanent changes to the zero2W. Just remove that SD card when/if you want to try booting directly from a USB device or when you want to boot a different OS from SD.

Enabling USB boot is a one time change that cannot be undone. You can still boot from SD card afterwards but IIRC if a USB drive is present it may give that priority over the SD card.
