I think that on a Pi Zero 2W you have to say explicitly that you want it to use libav. See here.
If you don't do that, then you probably get an (unseekable) elementary H.264 bitstream, just with a misleading filename.
Ok thanks for the info. I think I figured it out. It's just like @therealdavidp said it's just a h.264 posing as a full mp4 or mkv. Also it seems like you need to have ffmpeg installed to be able to use libav codec as option in raspicam-vidWhat are you using to play back the video?
