As already stated by "thagrol"..... so even if you type in what you "Think" is the right IP address or device name it might seem like you are actually logging in when actually it's just following its steps asking for username then password. I have accidentally put the wrong IP address in and everything looked like I was logging in only to go back and check the last digits where wrong of the IP address.
not sure how you flashed your OS to your MIcro sd or SSD but if you use Raspberry's Imager it is extremely easy to set everything including the network and network password before you ever boot your Pi up. In windows using the command line its

arp -a
will show you all the IP address on your network of all the devices connected.
