Because of the additional kernels -- it isn't just kernel.img any longer -- and all the initramfs images that are also now being mandated. The why of that is the thing I don't quite get.2) IDK if there is some reason why you (now) need a lot of free space on the /boot partition. I know that sometime in the last few years, it was decided that the /boot had to be a lot larger than it used to need to be. I never quite followed the why of that change.
