Have you tried other methods of provisioning Wi-Fi on Pico W that worked well?

Putting the Pico W into Wi-Fi Access Point mode then configuring via a web browser worked well for me. That should also allow configuration from the command line using a simple 'wget' command.

I started on implementing a command shell over the Pico W's virtual USB serial port which would allow Wi-Fi configuration but that's far from complete.
