I just checked my day19 code. The only advanced string handling function that I needed is substring. But I guess, that if you do not have that, you can probably write it yourself.Yikes! Your recovery from that stroke sounds very difficult--luckily effective at the same time.
I think there were four distinctly different types of COVID-19 vaccinations. After further clicking the link for the preprint
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 379v1.full
the post vaccine syndrome seems related to the mRNA vaccines, in particular, Spikevax (Moderna) and to a lesser extent Comirnaty (Pfizer). The size of the sample is admittedly small.
As a teacher I received the first round, experienced some weirdness with Modena but not a hospital level emergency. I feel lucky compared to a former student with severe long term COVID symptoms (apparently from the vaccine) and a colleague who developed a heart condition and died last year during an operation to fix it.
I'm currently on day 19 and wishing Chapel had better string handling. Maybe I just don't know the language well enough yet.
This was the problem for me, when I started this year with Chez (instead of Racket), as I did last year. To do anything at all, I first need to parse the input file. That is convert list of line strings, into numbers, or strings that mean something in the problem. And Chez does not have string-split function. So finally I ended up writing 4 different versions. That's why my code always starts with (load "utils.ss"). All the utility functions that I had to write during last 3 months of working on Advent are there. The file is now 10k long.
As for COVID vaccine, my experience is mostly the same as you describe. I received 4 shots (but 3 different vaccines). First was (here in Philippines) the Chinese vaccine. I really can't comment too much on that one, because I got Covid the same day (waiting in line from 07:00 to 14:00 in the midst of some 500 seniors).
Appart from Covid itself, the side effect of this first shot was a terrible neck rush. Anyway, 30 days later I got the second dose of the same, and this was without any side effects. Then a month later (I had to travel to Croatia to sell my house) I got there a Pfizer shot. That was without any consequences. But then again back in Philippines several months later I got a booster shot, and that was Moderna. They offered a choice of Chinese vaccine (the same I got before) and Moderna. I choose Moderna, but in hindsight, I should have chosen the Chinese! Moderna almost killed me. Four days after the shot, I had a heat attack. Luckily, that was it. No other consequences (that I know of) after that.
