As to be expected, the CM5 just like the pi5 had the SMI functionality removed. It was a very useful peripheral for advanced use cases. Oh well, I can still use an rp2040/rp2350 in between as a translator to parallel busses, just a bit more work.

Need to buy one of these and play around a bit :-)

I had to look up SMI. Didn't even know the older devices had it. You learn something every day.
Yeah, not a well documented feature, need to search for information to use it, but super handy to connect to legacy parallel busses and such.

with the newly released PIO stuff, you could probably hw accelerate such legacy devices still
the RP1 on the pi5/CM5 will give you most of the same functionality as the an external 2040/2350
