That's why, when possible, I don't touch the original settings file, but create additional files.If the setting file in the latest version of the program is updated with new settings,
your old file will not have them.
A lot of packages have a configuration directory as well as a file. DNSMasq is one example. It has /etc/dnsmasq.conf and /etc/dnsmasq.conf.d/. It reads the dnsmasq.conf file first, then reads all .conf files in dnsmasq.conf.d. So even if the original file gets updated all my settings are untouched.
