Sam Altman has forgotten more about AIs than either of us will ever know and him believing it is more than enough.How can something that is not sentient "understand" anything? You believing it to be the case does not make it so.
But you might like to read up on how inference engines work to see how it can generate unique things that have never existed before - including coded algorithms.
