The Pi would work, but it's vastly overpowered for this task. You also have to be careful of power failure, and orderly shutdown. Microcontrollers don't need special handling. Thanks, that’s good to know, i by no means have any particular hardware set in stone other than the 30vdc motor I have to drive and the RTD probes for temp. I only thought the Pi was a better option just to simplify having the touchscreen display plug and play but if the pico is better suited I will go that route
I would have this wired in place of the old controller, so it is already protected behind the existing shutdown circuits and manual shutdowns.
However, having gone through the design process yourself, if you decide a microcontroller is not suitable you can easily transfer what you have learned to a Pi-based solution.
So the next step is to pick a motor controller, display, and rtd probe interface. There is most likely a go-to model for each of these aspects of the design, i.e. the hardware that everyone picks, because everyone picks it, or because it's cheap on AliExpress. Look for modules that everyone blogs about. Or go through the RS catalogue and pick something shiny. When you have a potential candidate, do a web search to see if anyone is using it with a Pi Pico or Arduino. That will help you choose which microcontroller, but again, this is the Pi forum, and Pi Pico is very capable.
