OK. One last post. I looked into it further.
On a working pi, there is another entry for pwmchip2.
So, I believe this is a hardware issue.
I am somewhat surprised that my pi developed a hardware issue within a few months since I do not do anything drastic like overclocking. On my faulty pi, the pwmchip2 seems to be totally dead.
