Add below to cmdline.txt

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=2500

That has it up and running !

After adding nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=2500 the system has run for several hours with no problems. Have tried re-booting a dozen or more times from power off and every time it has come up fine (previously booting seemed to be when it was most likely to fail)

Most noticeable too was the drop in surface temperature of the WD SN740. Previously it was almost too hot to touch, now most of the time it is barely warm

Will do more testing tomorrow with the Gen3 setting.
