Why the alternative? Long term, it is easier to use the official OS and get support easier. If you have a specific reason to use something else, there might be a way to fit the Pi OS. I also find the Pi OS runs faster that the alternatives I tested as the Pi OS is optimised for the Pi.
For example, I like Linux Mint and copied some programs from Linux Mint to give me everything I want in the Pi OS. The LM packages go into Debian and Debian compiles them for ARM v8.
