are you really running MicroPython from Thonny, or the local Python interpreter? It can happen. Here's what Thonny should look like for running remote MicroPython, an answer I gave on another board: digital caliper data read rp2040 · micropython · Discussion #15155

If you hit Ctrl-D in the Thonny REPL, what do you see? It should probably be something like:
